When was galvanism discovered

Galvani himself referred to the phenomenon as animal electricity , believing that he had discovered a distinct form of electricity. Volta, on the other hand, claimed that the reputed animal electricity was due to an interaction between the metals used to mount and dissect the frog's leg, and in , before the Royal Society in London, announced the Voltaic Cell or pile, essentially the battery.

The modern study of galvanic effects in biology is called electrophysiology , the term galvanism being used only in historical contexts. The term is also used to describe the bringing to life of organisms using electricity, as shown in Mary Shelley 's work Frankenstein which was influenced by galvanism and people still speak of being ' galvanized into action'. Many Victorian scientists believed that if the right amount of electricity was charged into the brain, the corpse would come back to life.

Certainly they shared a passion for chemistry. However Davy, along with most of his contemporaries, believed strongly that science, the new science of chemistry in particular, was unequivocally a power for the public good.

After some studies of irritability and heart motion, around Galvani began a systematic investigation on the action of electricity on frog nerves and muscles. In his home laboratory Galvani developed an original experimental practice that combined approaches derived from the study of electricity and from anatomo-physiological research especially of Hallerian type, i.

For Galvani, the muscle fiber was analogous to a Leyden jar the first electrical capacitor that contained electricity in an unbalanced condition. The contraction was the result of the electrical discharge of the muscle through the attached nerve due to a physiological or experimental stimulus. The controversy, which catalysed science in the s, proved to be a fundamental event for the science to come, as it prompted new capital experiments in the history of electrophysiology and fostered the invention of the battery, realized by Volta in Medicine and science in the life of Luigi Galvani.
